The Three Battles Every Believer Must Fight to Become a True Servant of Allah

A Journey of Self-Purification and True Worship

Throughout human history, people have searched for the path that leads them to success, peace, and true fulfillment. Some have searched through wealth, some through knowledge, some through worldly achievements, and others through recognition and power.

Yet the greatest victory a human being can achieve is not the victory over the world outside — it is the victory over the weaknesses within.

A believer’s journey towards Allah is not a journey without obstacles. It is a journey of constant struggle, self-discipline, and purification.

To become a true servant of Allah is not merely a matter of words or wishes. It requires a person to fight against the forces that constantly pull them away from their Creator.

Every stage of this journey contains a test.

There are three great battles that every believer must face:

The battle against the nafs (the lower self),
the battle against Satan,
and the battle against the pressure of a society that may move away from divine guidance.

The first and most personal battle begins within ourselves.

The First Battle: The Struggle Against the Nafs

The greatest obstacle between a person and obedience to Allah is often not outside them — it is within them.

The nafs is that inner force which constantly demands comfort, pleasure, and immediate satisfaction.

A person may know what is right, yet the nafs pulls them towards what is wrong.

There is a famous verse that describes this struggle:

A sinful self remained within me for years;
No matter how long I prayed, it was difficult to transform it completely.

This is the reality of human nature.

Imagine a person encounters something forbidden.

The command of faith says:

“Leave it. It is not allowed.”

But the nafs responds:

“Take it. What is the harm?”

Then it begins presenting excuses:

“Your need is genuine.”

“Everyone else does it.”

“So-and-so also takes it.”

“Look at that person — they do the same thing.”

“Your child’s expenses are high.”

“Your family has been waiting for something.”

The nafs creates endless arguments to make disobedience appear reasonable.

But if you can stand against your nafs at that moment, you have achieved a great victory.

If you cannot resist it, it will overpower you.

This struggle appears even in the simplest acts of worship.

The call to prayer is heard.

You know it is time to stand before Allah.

But the nafs whispers:

“Sleep a little longer.”

“You are tired.”

“There is still time.”

And you turn over, adjust your blanket, and continue sleeping.

If you had the strength to reject that desire at that moment, you would have already stood up and walked towards the mosque.

This is why the first struggle in the path of servitude to Allah is:

The struggle against your own nafs.

The Second Battle: The Struggle Against Satan

But the nafs is not alone.

Behind it stands another enemy:

Satan.

The accursed Satan continuously encourages the nafs, strengthens its desires, and pushes human beings away from obedience.

Allah describes this reality in the Qur’an:

“The one who whispers into the hearts of mankind.”
(Surah An-Nas 114:5)

Satan does not always invite people openly towards evil.

Often, he beautifies it.

He makes wrong appear attractive.

He gives false names to sinful things.

He makes immorality look like freedom.

He makes indecency appear as progress.

He turns distractions into “culture.”

He convinces people that abandoning religious values is modernity.

This is his method:

To decorate falsehood until people accept it.

If a person cannot struggle against Satan’s whispers, how will they remain firm in the obedience of Allah?

The Third Battle: The Pressure of Society

The third battle is against the influence of a corrupted environment.

Society has a powerful force over human beings.

Imagine a crowd moving in one direction.

It is easy to walk with the crowd.

But walking in the opposite direction requires courage and strength.

You must struggle.

When the values of society move away from the commands of Allah and His Messenger ﷺ, a believer experiences a conflict.

The world may say one thing.

Faith may demand another.

Society may normalize something.

Revelation may reject it.

At that moment, the believer must choose.

A wise saying expresses this reality:

If the times do not agree with you, do not surrender yourself to the times.

Do not allow yourself to be shaped completely by the standards of your environment.

The easier path is always to follow the crowd.

When society does not change according to truth, many people choose to change themselves according to society.

But the path of faith requires courage.

The Greatest Jihad: The Battle Within

This is why a person must struggle in these three areas before they can truly become a servant of Allah:

The struggle against the nafs.

The struggle against Satan.

The struggle against harmful social influence.

This is the real test of faith.

It is reported that when the Prophet ﷺ was asked:

“O Messenger of Allah, what is the greatest form of jihad?”

He emphasized the struggle against one’s own self in obedience to Allah.

The greatest struggle is the struggle to discipline yourself, control your desires, and make your heart submit to the commands of Allah.

This is why scholars have described it as:

The greater struggle.

The external battles of life may come and go.

But the battle within a human being never ends.

The struggle against temptation.

The struggle against arrogance.

The struggle against laziness.

The struggle between what the heart knows is right and what the desires demand.

This struggle continues every morning and every night.

Every moment, a person faces a choice:

Right or wrong.

Halal or haram.

Truth or falsehood.

The way of Allah or the desires of the world.

The Path Towards Allah

The journey of becoming a true servant of Allah is not an easy road.

The moment a person sincerely chooses this path, they begin to discover their own weaknesses. They begin to see the hidden battles taking place inside their heart.

There will be moments of difficulty.

There will be moments of weakness.

There will be moments when the easier choice appears more attractive.

But this struggle itself is a sign of life in the heart.

A person who struggles against evil is a person who still cares about truth.

A heart that feels the conflict between right and wrong is a heart that is still searching for Allah’s pleasure.

The purpose of this journey is not to become a person who never faces temptation.

The purpose is to become a person who, whenever temptation appears, chooses Allah over the temporary desires of this world.

Because true servitude is not proven when obedience is easy.

It is proven when obedience requires sacrifice.

The believer’s greatest victory is not conquering others.

It is conquering the self.

And whoever wins this battle within will find the greatest freedom of all:

The freedom of becoming a true servant of Allah.
