Foundational Concepts in Islam: Basics & Beliefs

As-salamu alaykum, dear young learners!

Welcome to this special journey to understand Islam’s core beliefs and practices. Islam teaches us how to live peacefully, purposefully, and with kindness. Each concept is simple to understand and deeply meaningful, guiding us to become better people while growing closer to Allah (God).

1. Belief in One God (Allah)

The first and most important belief in Islam is called Tawheed, which means the belief in only one God, Allah. Allah is unique—He has no partners, no equals, and no beginning or end. Everything we see, like the stars in the sky, the plants and animals, and even ourselves, was created by Allah. This belief is what makes Islam special and unites Muslims worldwide in worship.

In the Qur’an, Allah says:

“Say, He is Allah, the One and Only.” (Surah Al-Ikhlas, 112:1)

Believing in only one God means that we don’t worship anyone or anything else. We rely only on Allah for help, guidance, and protection. It helps us feel strong and at peace, knowing that the Creator of everything is watching over us and taking care of us. This belief is the foundation of everything we do, and it affects how we live our lives every day.

2. Belief in Prophets (Messengers of Allah)

Allah loves His creation, and because of His love, He sent special people to guide us—these people are called prophets. Prophets are chosen by Allah to deliver His message to humanity, teaching people about Allah and how to live a good life. Some of the famous prophets include Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham), Prophet Musa (Moses), Prophet Isa (Jesus), and the final prophet, Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ).

Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) is known as the “Seal of the Prophets” because he is the last prophet sent by Allah. He taught us how to be kind, honest, and caring. Even people who weren’t Muslims admired him for his honesty and compassion. His life serves as an example for all Muslims on how to live with patience, kindness, and generosity.

In the Qur’an, Allah tells us:

“Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah you have an excellent example.” (Surah Al-Ahzab, 33:21)

3. Belief in the Angels

Angels are special beings created by Allah from light. They have important roles, and although we can’t see them, they are always around us. Angels carry out Allah’s commands, protect us, and even record our deeds. There are specific angels assigned for different tasks, like Angel Jibreel (Gabriel), who brought Allah’s messages to the prophets.

One beautiful thing to remember is that the angels record all the good things we do, as well as our mistakes. Knowing this helps us make choices that please Allah and brings us closer to Him.

4. Belief in the Holy Books

Throughout history, Allah sent His guidance to humanity in the form of holy books. These books were given to the prophets to help people understand what Allah wants from them. The final and complete book is the Qur’an, which was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). The Qur’an is unique because it is unchanged and protected by Allah, and it serves as a guide for every part of life.

Allah says in the Qur’an:

“This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allah.” (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:2)

Muslims learn and memorize verses from the Qur’an as it is not just a book but a source of wisdom, light, and comfort. Reading it reminds us of Allah’s love and mercy and teaches us how to make good choices.

5. Belief in the Day of Judgment

Muslims believe that one day everything will come to an end, and everyone will return to Allah. This is known as the Day of Judgment. On this day, Allah will judge us based on our actions in this world. Those who did good deeds and followed Allah’s commands will be rewarded, and those who didn’t will be held accountable.

Believing in the Day of Judgment encourages us to do our best in this life. It reminds us that everything we do matters, and Allah is aware of our actions. Even small acts of kindness, like helping someone or saying a kind word, will be rewarded by Allah.

6. Belief in Qadr (Divine Destiny)

Qadr means that Allah has a plan for everything, and He knows what will happen before it even occurs. This belief helps us accept that some things happen for reasons we might not understand, but Allah knows best. Believing in Qadr teaches us to trust Allah and to remain hopeful, even in difficult times.

Knowing that Allah has control over everything helps us stay calm and grateful. If something good happens, we thank Allah. If something challenging happens, we stay patient, knowing that Allah always has a wise reason for everything He allows.

The Five Pillars of Islam

In addition to these beliefs, Islam also teaches us important practices known as the Five Pillars. These pillars are acts of worship that help strengthen our connection to Allah and build good character.

  1. Shahada (Declaration of Faith): This is the first step to becoming a Muslim. It involves saying, “There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad (ﷺ) is the Messenger of Allah.” This statement affirms our belief in Allah and His last prophet.
  2. Salah (Prayer): Muslims pray five times a day to remember Allah and feel close to Him. Prayer is a special time when we leave our worries aside and connect with Allah.
  3. Zakat (Charity): Islam teaches us to care for those who are less fortunate. Zakat involves giving a portion of our wealth to those in need.
  4. Sawm (Fasting in Ramadan): During the month of Ramadan, Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset. Fasting helps us feel compassion for those who have little and reminds us of the blessings Allah has given us.
  5. Hajj (Pilgrimage to Mecca): Muslims who are able make a journey to Mecca at least once in their lives. Hajj is a time for spiritual renewal and unity with Muslims from around the world.

How These Beliefs Help Us Daily

Islam’s teachings are not just for special days; they guide us every day. For example:

  • Saying Bismillah before we eat reminds us to thank Allah for our food.
  • Saying Alhamdulillah after eating shows gratitude.
  • Saying Astaghfirullah when we make mistakes helps us seek Allah’s forgiveness.

Why It’s Important to Love and Follow These Beliefs

These beliefs make us feel connected to Allah and help us live peacefully with each other. They teach us kindness, honesty, and respect for all of Allah’s creations.

The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said:

“The best among you are those who have the best manners and character.” (Sahih Bukhari)

Islam is not just a religion; it’s a way of life that shapes us to be the best we can be. Following these beliefs brings peace to our hearts and helps us spread goodness in the world.

Let’s Remember

  • Believing in Allah gives us purpose.
  • Learning from the prophets teaches us wisdom.
  • Knowing the Qur’an guides us to make good choices.

A Life-Guiding Faith

Islam is more than a religion; it’s a complete way of life. Following these beliefs helps us to be our best selves, stay connected to Allah, and spread goodness wherever we go. Islam guides us to make choices that bring peace to our hearts and make the world a better place for everyone.
