The Mystery of Time: Relativity, the Universe, and the Qur’anic Perspective

A Journey of Reflection — The Nature of Time

Imagine if you were given the power to control time.

Imagine you could reverse it or move forward through it.

When life becomes exhausting, when the weight of sorrow reaches deep into the soul, how would it feel if you could simply leave everything behind and travel back into the past?

Perhaps you would return to your childhood.

Back to your mother’s embrace — that place which felt like a cure for every pain and a shelter from every fear.

Perhaps you would hold your father’s hand again and hide behind his strong, protective presence, where the storms of the world could not reach you.

You would return to those days of innocence, simplicity, and peace.

But the reality is:

Time cannot be controlled.

The same time that Allah has sworn by in the Qur’an continues its journey without stopping.

Allah says:

“By time, indeed mankind is in loss.”
(Surah Al-Asr 103:1-2)

Human beings are like passengers sitting on a moving journey.

The vehicle continues forward.

No matter how successful, wealthy, beautiful, or powerful a person becomes, one destination awaits everyone:

The end of this worldly journey.

Death.

Time belongs to no human being.

But this raises another fascinating question:

If we cannot control time…

Can time itself be relative?

What exactly is time relativity?

Understanding Time Relativity: The Twin Paradox

To understand this concept, let us consider one of the most famous examples in physics:

The Twin Paradox.

Imagine two identical twins.

One twin remains on Earth.

The other travels through space at extremely high speed.

Common sense tells us:

Both twins should age at the same rate.

But according to the theories of Albert Einstein, something extraordinary can happen.

The twin travelling at very high speed could return younger than the twin who stayed on Earth.

How is this possible?

Because according to relativity, time is not absolute.

Time can pass differently depending on speed and gravity.

Gravity and the Flow of Time

According to Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity:

The stronger the gravitational field, the slower time moves.

For example, near extremely massive objects such as black holes, gravity becomes so powerful that time behaves very differently.

This concept was famously shown in the movie Interstellar.

In the film, astronauts visit a planet near a black hole where a short period of time for them corresponds to years passing on Earth.

Although the movie is fictional, it was inspired by real scientific concepts related to gravitational time dilation.

Speed and the Slowing of Time

Einstein’s Special Theory of Relativity introduces another fascinating idea:

The faster an object moves, the slower time passes for it relative to a stationary observer.

As an object approaches the speed of light, the effect becomes greater.

At the speed of light — according to current physics — time would behave in an extreme way.

This means:

Time is not as simple as human experience makes it appear.

It is connected to the structure of space and the universe itself.

Both General and Special Relativity reveal a profound reality:

Time can be relative.

The Concept of Time Bubbles

Based on these ideas, scientists have explored other theoretical possibilities, including concepts sometimes described as:

Time bubbles.

A time bubble is a hypothetical region where time could pass differently compared with the surrounding environment.

Imagine a place where time flows at a different rate.

On Earth, we do not have the extreme gravity of a black hole, nor can humans travel anywhere near the speed of light.

Yet some theoretical models explore whether there could be unusual regions where the flow of time is altered.

Some of these ideas involve hypothetical forms of matter called:

Exotic matter.

Exotic matter is not an ordinary substance.

It is a theoretical concept involving unusual properties, including possibilities such as negative energy density.

Scientists have proposed that such concepts might be needed for certain theoretical manipulations of spacetime.

A Reflection on the Cave and the Passage of Time

Now consider something remarkable.

The Qur’an, more than fourteen centuries ago, described events where human beings experienced a completely different perception of time.

The story of the People of the Cave is one such example.

A group of believers sought refuge in a cave.

Allah caused them to remain there for many years.

When they awakened, they thought they had stayed only a short time.

But in reality:

Hundreds of years had passed.

Allah says:

“So We caused them to sleep in the cave for a number of years.”
(Surah Al-Kahf 18:11)

And later:

“They remained in their cave for three hundred years and exceeded by nine.”
(Surah Al-Kahf 18:25)

Their perception of time and the reality of time were completely different.

The Story of Prophet Uzayr (عليه السلام)

Another example appears in Surah Al-Baqarah.

Allah mentions the story of a man who passed by a ruined town.

Allah caused him to remain in that state for one hundred years.

When he was brought back to life, he thought only a short period had passed.

Allah asked him:

“How long have you remained?”

He replied:

“Perhaps I remained a day or part of a day.”

But Allah informed him that one hundred years had passed.

A Question for Reflection

These stories invite us to think deeply.

Modern physics has discovered that time is not as fixed and simple as humans once believed.

The Qur’an described extraordinary experiences of time long before modern theories existed.

This does not mean every scientific theory is a direct explanation of Qur’anic verses.

Rather, it reminds us that the universe contains realities far beyond ordinary human perception.

The Creator of time knows the true nature of time.

So the questions remain:

Could humanity one day reach a level where we can experience time in ways we cannot imagine today?

Could future discoveries reveal even deeper realities about the nature of the universe?

Only Allah knows the complete truth.

The Journey Continues

Time is one of the greatest signs of Allah’s creation.

We cannot stop it.

We cannot reverse it.

We cannot escape it.

Every moment carries us forward.

The wise person is not the one who tries to control time.

The wise person is the one who understands how to use the time given to them.

Because this life is temporary.

And the true destination lies beyond time itself.

In the next episode, we will explore another fascinating question:

The speed of light — the ultimate limit of the universe.

What does modern physics say about it?

And what reflections does the Qur’an inspire when we think about this incredible cosmic reality?

Until then,

Allah Hafiz.
