Imagine opening your eyes and finding yourself standing in the middle of a vast, mysterious forest.
You do not know how you arrived there.
You do not know where you came from.
And you do not know the path that leads back home.
Suddenly, you discover a book lying beside you.
Its pages contain signs.
Signs that can guide you step by step toward your true destination.
Now you have two choices.
Either you study those signs carefully and begin your journey home, moving closer with every step…
Or you become fascinated by the forest, forget the purpose of your journey, and accept it as your permanent home.
Perhaps you would think that everyone would naturally choose the path back.
But reality is different.
Most human beings have become lost in this forest.
We have ignored the signs.
We have forgotten where we came from and where we are ultimately going.
This is why we began this journey of Reason & Reflection.
To discover who we truly are.
To understand why we exist.
To find the purpose behind our journey.
Humanity Was Created to Discover, Not Merely Exist
Through our study of the Qur’an, we discovered that human beings were not created merely to survive.
They were created to learn.
To think.
To reflect.
To understand.
In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says:
“Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the alternation of the night and the day, and the [great] ships which sail through the sea with that which benefits people, and what Allāh has sent down from the heavens of rain, giving life thereby to the earth after its lifelessness and dispersing therein every [kind of] moving creature, and [His] directing of the winds and the clouds controlled between the heaven and earth are signs for a people who use reason.”
(Qur’an 2:164)
But notice something remarkable.
Allah does not say:
“Signs for all human beings.”
He does not say:
“Signs for all believers.”
He specifically says:
For those who use عقل (Aql).
Why?
Every human being possesses a mind.
So why does the Qur’an mention a specific group — the people of Aql?
The answer lies in understanding the true meaning of this word.
The Deeper Meaning of Aql
Before exploring the Qur’anic concept of Aql, we need to understand another important idea:
Mindfulness.
Today, mindfulness has become a widely discussed concept.
The idea existed thousands of years ago in different traditions, but in the modern world it was popularized through psychological research, particularly by Professor Jon Kabat-Zinn at the University of Massachusetts.
Mindfulness means being fully present in the current moment — observing reality without being controlled by distractions, assumptions, or biases.
In simple words:
To truly experience what is happening right now.
Imagine holding a cup of tea.
Normally, while drinking tea, your attention may be somewhere else.
You may be looking at your phone.
Thinking about the past.
Worrying about the future.
Or simply drinking without awareness.
Your body is there.
But your mind is somewhere else.
Mindfulness means being completely present.
You notice the fragrance of the tea.
You feel its warmth.
You experience every sip.
You are no longer absent from the moment.
This ability to focus is extremely important for reflection, analysis, and deep understanding.
But the real question is:
Are we truly mindful?
Most of the time, no.
We are at home, but our minds are at work.
We are at work, but our thoughts are somewhere else.
We are with people, but our attention is trapped inside our phones.
Even in prayer, our bodies may be standing before Allah while our thoughts wander elsewhere.
As a poet beautifully expressed (Transliteration):
Jo main sar-ba-sajda hua kabhi, to zameen se aane lagi sada
Tera dil to hai sanam-aashna, tujhe kya milega namaz mein
Paraphrased:
“I once stood in prostration,
and a voice came from the earth:
Your heart knows nothing of devotion;
what will you gain from your prayer?”
عقل Means To Bind
Now let us return to the Qur’anic concept of Aql.
In Arabic, the word عقل originally carries the meaning of:
To bind.
When an animal is tied with a rope, it is restrained.
But what does this have to do with intellect?
The connection is profound.
True عقل appears when a person learns to restrain:
- uncontrolled desires,
- anger,
- jealousy,
- greed,
- arrogance,
- worldly distractions.
When a person can control these forces, the mind becomes free to see reality clearly.
This is similar to mindfulness.
The Qur’an’s choice of this word is incredibly meaningful.
When Allah speaks of:
لِقَوْمٍ يَعْقِلُونَ
“for a people who use reason”
it refers not simply to intelligent people.
It refers to people who observe with an open heart and disciplined mind.
People who do not allow:
- prejudice,
- ego,
- desires,
- or personal interests
to blind them from truth.
They study the signs of creation.
They learn from life.
They control their emotions.
They search for reality.
This is the intellect that the Qur’an praises.
How Do We Become Among the People of Aql?
Different civilizations have developed different practices for awareness.
Some traditions use meditation.
Some use breathing techniques.
Some use physical disciplines.
But Islam provides a unique path toward awareness:
Salah.
Observe yourself when you stand for prayer.
The moment you begin, distractions appear.
The problems of the day return.
Memories emerge.
Future worries attack.
Your mind tries to escape.
But if you begin the struggle of bringing yourself back…
If in every standing, every bowing, and every prostration you return your attention to Allah…
you begin the journey toward true mindfulness.
It will not be easy.
But the moment a person wins this inner battle, the peace and sweetness they experience cannot easily be described.
This is why the Qur’an repeatedly commands not merely to “perform” prayer, but to establish prayer.
Because Salah is not only a ritual.
It is training.
It is a discipline.
It is a transformation.
It teaches the human being to become present.
When the Mind Awakens, The Universe Speaks
When we break free from distractions and become truly aware, the signs of Allah begin appearing everywhere.
In the endless sky.
In flowing water.
In green trees.
In sunlight.
Even in something as simple as a sip of tea.
The world changes when the observer changes.
The universe was never empty of signs.
We were simply not paying attention.
Free yourself from mental captivity.
Wake up.
Reflect.
And strive to become among those whom the Qur’an describes as:
People who truly use their intellect.
The path is now clear.
As we continue this journey, we will explore the hidden secrets of the universe — signs that may transform the way we see existence itself.
Until next time,
May the peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you.
