A Journey of Reflection — The Mystery of Human Existence
What happens after death?
This is perhaps one of the greatest questions that has occupied the human mind throughout history.
Every human being wonders:
What comes after this life?
Does consciousness end when the body stops functioning?
Is there another reality beyond the physical world?
For centuries, philosophers, scientists, and spiritual thinkers have reflected upon these questions.
Modern science has explored many aspects of human existence, yet the mystery of consciousness remains one of the deepest unanswered questions.
One of the most fascinating areas of research related to this subject is the phenomenon known as:
Near-Death Experience (NDE).
The Experience of Pam Reynolds: A Journey Between Life and Death
One of the most widely discussed cases in the study of near-death experiences is that of Pam Reynolds.
Pam was an American singer whose life suddenly came to a critical point.
Doctors discovered that she had a dangerous blood vessel abnormality in her brain. Without immediate surgery, her condition could have become fatal.
The doctors decided to perform an extremely rare and high-risk operation.
During the procedure, her body temperature was lowered significantly.
Her heart was stopped.
Her breathing was stopped.
The blood was drained from her brain.
From a medical perspective, Pam entered a state of clinical death.
Yet during this period, she later described a series of extraordinary experiences.
She reported feeling as if she had separated from her body — a phenomenon often called an:
Out-of-Body Experience (OBE).
She described seeing the operating room from above.
She claimed she could hear the doctors’ voices, observe their movements, and perceive what was happening around her.
According to her account, this was not a dream.
She experienced it as a state of awareness.
This raised a profound question:
If the brain was not functioning normally, how was awareness possible?
The Near-Death Experience Phenomenon
Pam Reynolds was not the only person to report such experiences.
Over the years, researchers have collected thousands of similar accounts from people around the world.
Surveys have suggested that a significant number of people claim to have experienced moments close to death where they perceived unusual states of consciousness.
Researchers studying near-death experiences have found recurring patterns among many reports.
Many people describe:
- A feeling of leaving their body
- Seeing their surroundings from an external viewpoint
- Moving through a tunnel-like experience
- Encountering a powerful light
- Experiencing a feeling of entering another reality
One of the researchers in this field, Bruce Greyson, developed methods to study and compare these experiences.
His research examined thousands of accounts and found that many people reported similar elements.
This raises an important question:
Why do so many people, across different cultures and backgrounds, describe similar experiences?
The Mystery of Consciousness
The first major phenomenon is the:
Out-of-Body Experience
People who report this experience often describe feeling as if they are separate from their physical body.
They describe observing their own body, medical staff, and surroundings.
This creates a profound philosophical question:
If the brain is the source of consciousness, then how do such experiences occur when the brain is severely impaired?
This leads us to one of the greatest mysteries of modern science:
What exactly is consciousness?
Is consciousness merely a product of the brain?
Or is the brain only a means through which consciousness interacts with the physical world?
The reality is that consciousness remains one of the most complex and mysterious subjects in neuroscience.
The nature of the soul and consciousness is a topic that deserves deeper discussion, and we will explore it further when we reach the topic of human creation in this journey.
The Tunnel Experience and the Journey Beyond
The second commonly reported phenomenon is the:
Tunnel Experience
Many people who have near-death experiences describe seeing a tunnel and moving through it toward a bright light.
Some describe this as a transition into another realm or reality.
This raises fascinating questions.
Previously, when discussing black holes, we explored how extreme cosmic phenomena challenge our understanding of space and reality.
Black holes represent regions where our current understanding of physics reaches its limits.
Scientists continue to study whether black holes may reveal deeper structures of the universe.
Some physicists, including Stephen Hawking, explored possibilities regarding black holes and their relationship with information, space, and the nature of reality.
This naturally leads to a thought-provoking question:
Could the tunnel experience reported in near-death experiences represent some kind of transition of consciousness beyond our normal physical reality?
Could it be a journey from one state of existence to another?
These are questions that remain open for exploration.
The Islamic Perspective: The Soul and the World Beyond
Islam provides a clear perspective on one essential reality:
Human existence does not end with physical death.
The Qur’an teaches that this worldly life is temporary, and that after death there is another stage of existence.
Allah says:
“Every soul will taste death.”
(Qur’an 3:185)
According to Islamic belief, after death the soul enters a realm known as:
Barzakh.
Barzakh is a stage between worldly life and the Hereafter.
It is a reality beyond our normal physical experience.
This raises deep questions:
Is consciousness connected only to the physical body?
Or does the soul continue its existence beyond the limitations of the body?
The answers to these questions ultimately belong to Allah alone.
The Limits of Human Knowledge
As human beings, we can observe.
We can research.
We can form theories and hypotheses.
Science allows us to explore the universe and discover signs within creation.
But complete knowledge belongs only to Allah.
The mysteries of consciousness, death, and what lies beyond this world are among the greatest realities that human beings continue to contemplate.
However, these discussions remind us of something profound:
The human being may not be limited to what can only be measured physically.
The Qur’an has always emphasized that this worldly existence is temporary.
Our physical body returns to the earth.
But the journey of the soul continues.
A Reflection Between Science and Revelation
When we examine near-death experiences, questions about consciousness, and the mysteries of existence, we find ourselves facing realities that challenge our understanding.
People who have experienced moments close to death describe awareness, perception, and experiences beyond ordinary explanation.
Islam teaches that human beings are more than just physical bodies.
The soul has a reality beyond this temporary world.
The Qur’an reminded humanity more than fourteen centuries ago that this life is not the final destination.
The true eternal life lies beyond death.
Perhaps these scientific discussions do not provide all the answers.
But they encourage us to ask deeper questions:
Who are we?
What is consciousness?
Where do we go after death?
And what is the ultimate purpose of our existence?
The complete answer belongs to the One who created life and death.
Allah.
To Be Continued…
In the next episode, we will explore another fascinating question:
When Prophet Muhammad ﷺ travelled through the heavens during the event of Mi‘raj, did time operate differently for him?
Could the concept of relativity help us understand this extraordinary journey?
What does modern physics say about the nature of time?
And are there other references to the concept of time relativity in the Qur’an?
Until then,
Allah Hafiz.
